Puerto Escondido's Angel Salinas and his masks have drawn
worldwide attention. Articles and photographs of him and his masks have been published in over 35 surfing magazines from all over the world. Puerto Escondido's Ruben Piña has takenn many of Angel's mask photos. Here's a sampling of the articles and Ruben's photos.

In November, 2001, a crew from the Discovery Channel's Lonely Planet television series came to Puerto Escondido to film a segment on Angel Salinas and his masks.

Angel Salinas devotes much of his life to promoting surfing
throughout Mexico and the world. He has surfed along both coasts in Mexico, and in Australia, Hawaii, Spain, Costa Rica, and on the US west coast.

The New Masks

But why the masks? They are patterned after wrestling masks that originated in Greece over 100 years ago. "It's something designed to draw attention to itself", Angel explains. "It's like giving an identity to a person who remains in suspense. The real reason behind the use of the mask is to broaden the recognition of Puerto Escondido in the world, and to gain respect for the surfing sport."
